Story from Flight of the Humpback

Boycott letter to Mitsubishi or any Japanese company

Mitsubishi
PO Box 8
Melrose Park
S.A. 5039

Dear General Manager,

I am writing to express my disgust and abhorrence at Japans massacre of up to 20,000 dolphins every year and Japans slaughtering of 863 whales this year in the Antarctic. Japan also wants to restart commercial whaling even though in effect that is what they are doing already under the thin disguise of “scientific whaling “.

I feel frustrated with Japans arrogance and shameful behavior on this issue and its refusal to listen to world public opinion, so as a large Japanese company I am holding you accountable for your countries actions.

If by the last day of the upcoming International Whaling Commission IWC meeting in St Kitts, Japan still insists on killing whales and dolphins I will boycott all Mitsubishi products and encourage everyone I know to do the same.

I am aware that Japan plans to put 10 Fin whales and 50 humpback whales on the menu along with up to 900 other whales it wants to kill this coming summer. This archaic human activity is simply unacceptable and must be stopped.

These humpbacks were hunted nearly to extinction and are still listed as an endangered species, they are just starting to recover in numbers and cannot sustain any more killing. Also these whales are being enjoyed through a booming whale watching industry worth around $300,000,000 which is also threatened by Japans whaling plans. We look forward to the whales return each year. These whales have become our friends so when Japan kills a whale they are in effect killing our friends.

Japans whaling is illegal under international laws. Considering Japans arrogance and the fact they are busily buying votes for the IWC and given the reluctance by other countries to take Japan to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, consumer power and boycotts appear to be the only non violent solution to bring an end to whaling.

I hope you can use your influence as a large Japanese company to convince your government that it is in no-ones interest to continue whaling. In fact everyone will be losers, as Japan loses millions of dollars in lost taxes as major Japanese companies have reduced sales as a result of a boycott of Japanese products and services through out the world.

I look forward to your urgent response.
