WHALES AND TRADE.
Thursday, 03 August 2006
The reason why the anti whaling governments will NOT take legal action - or for that matter any worthwhile action- against Japan can be summed up in one word. TRADE.
American agribusiness is totally opposed to the Bush Administraton imposing trade sanctions against Japan ( which would force Japan to stop whaling ) because big business doesnt want to see their industries jeopardised. American agribusiness is composed almost entirely of huge corporations with virtual monopolies over agriculture; monopolies which have all but wiped out individual farmers..
Japan has just lifted trade sanctions against US beef imposed for nearly l8 months because of an incidence of mad cow disease in the US. This is the reason for almost royal welcome that George Bush gave to Japanese leader PM Koizumi in July. No mention of whales of course.
Japan is Australia's biggest trading partner, a huge market for resources, tourism and agricultural products. The Australian Government is currently negotiating a Japan/Australia Free Trade Agreement. There's no way the Howard Government will rock that boat by making waves about whales.
Japan is New Zealand's fourth most important trading partner. New Zealand relies on mega tourism from Japan and a market for agricultural and forestry products. The NZ government is currently a hung government which is unable to make major controversial decisions on issues like whales.
Japan is the second largest economy in the world. Japanese corporations have assets which are greater than some countries' entire economies.
Environmental organisations cannot force anti whaling governments to take legal action against Japan because the laws protect governments and their insane decisions. Its called " executive power".
People power is the only answer. BOYCOTT JAPAN. Do not buy Japanese goods. Tell your neighbours, families, communities, local business to join the boycott and make the protest a global outcry against this horror.
Japan is whaling illegally. The slaughter is illegal under many international conventions. Japan is making a mockery of international laws.
So are the anti whaling governments !
