Byron Dolphin and Whale lovers joined international day of protest at Hervey Bay

............................................................................

Around 10 concerned Dolphins and Whale lovers gathered at Hervey Bay Marina at 11am today 20th sep to sing songs hand out leaflets collect petitions and talk to interested people about what can be done to help the Dolphins and Whales. Whale man Bunna Lawrie from the mirning tribe in South Australia will was also there along with cetacean activist Howie Cooke.

Dean Jefferys from the Byron whale action group who is currently in Hervey Bay making whale movie clips for his website said After spending 3 weeks filming and experiencing the joy of dolphins and whales in Hervey Bay i find it inconceivable that people would slaugther these joyfilled and majestic creatures. I the past year Japans slaughterd 863 whales in the Antarctic and massacre up to 20,000 dolphins. Dean Jefferys has now made 5x 7 minute video clips to help the whales and has uploaded these clips to his website from a boat in Hervey Bay. To see Dean site check www.flightofthehumpback.org

The Japanese government is decimating the dolphin populations. They blame
the dolphins for the declining fish populations rather than face the fact
that the oceans of the world are in decline due to over fishing largely by the japanese
themselves. Instead they believe killing the dolphins is a form of pest control to help the
fishing industry, but no evidence exists to support this claim. The slaughtered dolphins are
also processed and used as pet food or fertilizer.

The dolphin drive hunts destroy defenseless, highly intelligent, self-aware
mammals in the most brutal way imaginable. These socially complex mammals
witness the screaming slaughter of their close family group in a sea turned
red with blood, but won't abandon their pod. Some of the survivors are
captured and sold to dolphin traders. These dolphins are then transported
off to live the rest of their lives confined in pools as "entertainment" in
captive swim programs and aquariums like the Sea World captive dolphin- for profit industry.
The hunts would not be economically viable without the sale of these live dolphins to unscrupulous dolphinariums

Japan plans to put 10 Fin whales and 50 Australain humpback whales on it’s menu along with up to 900 other whales it wants to kill this coming summer. This archaic human activity is simply unacceptable and must be stopped.

These humpbacks were hunted nearly to extinction and are still listed as an endangered species, they are just starting to recover in numbers and cannot sustain any more killing. These whales are being enjoyed through a booming whale watching industry in Australia worth around $300,000,000 which is also threatened by Japans whaling plans. We look forward to the whales return each year. So when Japan kills a whale they are in effect killing our friends.

Jefferys said If Japan continues the slaughter of these defensless creatures I will boycott all Japanese products and services and encourage everyone I know to do the same.
